woman curious if she is pregnant and may not know it

Yes, it’s possible to be pregnant and not know it. While pregnancy causes noticeable symptoms in some women, other women might not experience any symptoms besides a missed period (and even this can be complicated due to implantation bleeding, which can be mistaken for a period).

Read on to learn more about symptoms that might indicate you’re pregnant. However, it’s important to note that even if you’re having symptoms of pregnancy, other conditions can be the culprit.

If you think there’s a chance you’re pregnant, taking a pregnancy test is the first step toward finding out. (At Alabama Pregnancy Test Center, we offer free, medical-grade pregnancy testing and a safe space to talk.)

What Are the Symptoms of Pregnancy?

Pregnancy affects every woman differently. However, there are certain symptoms to look out for that might indicate you’re pregnant:

  1. Missed Period: A missed menstrual period is often the first noticeable sign of pregnancy. If your cycle is regular and your period is late, it’s a good idea to take a pregnancy test.
  2. Nausea with/without vomiting: Nausea during pregnancy, commonly referred to as morning sickness, can occur at any time of the day and be accompanied by vomiting. It’s thought to be caused by rising hormone levels and can last throughout the whole pregnancy.
  3. Breast Changes: Early in pregnancy, you may notice your breasts becoming tender, swollen, or more sensitive. The areolas (the area around your nipples) may also darken as your body prepares for breastfeeding.
  4. Fatigue: Increased levels of the hormone progesterone can make you feel unusually tired, even early in pregnancy. Your body is working hard to support the developing baby, which can leave you feeling more fatigued than usual. If you’re feeling the urge to take frequent naps and notice other symptoms of pregnancy, it’s time to take a pregnancy test.
  5. Frequent Urination: Hormonal changes and increased blood flow to your kidneys can cause you to urinate more often than usual.
