In the meantime, here’s what you need to know about timing.
Why Timing Makes a Difference
Many women take a pregnancy test when they first notice early signs of pregnancy. These can include nausea, fatigue, tender breasts, mood changes, or a missed period. While these symptoms may suggest pregnancy, they can also be related to stress, hormonal changes, or other health conditions. That’s why it’s critical to take a pregnancy test.
Pregnancy tests work by detecting the hormone hCG (human chorionic gonadotropin). This hormone begins building in your body after a fertilized egg implants in the uterus and rises steadily during early pregnancy. Testing too soon may result in a negative test, even if you are pregnant, simply because there is not yet enough hCG to detect.
The Best Time to Take a Test
Some pregnancy tests can detect pregnancy several days before a missed period for women with a 28-day cycle. However, the Mayo Clinic recommends waiting until at least a day or two after your missed period for the most reliable results. This extra time allows hCG levels to rise enough for a more accurate test.
If your cycle is irregular, knowing when to test can be harder. A helpful guideline is to wait at least 21 days after unprotected sexual intercourse before testing. Speaking with a healthcare provider is also recommended if you experience irregular cycles due to medical conditions.
